Frequently Asked Questions

How do I borrow the kit?

If you're keen to borrow this kit of assorted cutlery & crockery at your event – fill out our booking form to make a request. The team will get back to you to let you know if it is available on the date you need it.

What's in the kit?

Standard Kit

Each kit contains all you need for a waste free event/party for 20 people. One kit contains:  20 bowls, 20 cups, 20 plates, 20 knifes/forks/spoons, one apron, one sign.

Order as many kits as you need – we have a total of 5 kits, which cater for an event of 100 people. We don’t break up kits, so if you have an odd number, you’ll need to round up – e.g. If you have 30 people, you’ll need to order 2 kits, for 40 people.

Crockery ‘mini’ Kit

In these kits you will receive 20 crockery plates, 20 knives, 20 forks and 20 fabric napkins

We have two kits – to cater for up to 40 people.

Add ons!

You can choose to add on the following to your order:

  • 3 plastic wash basins (recommended for events where you will be hand-washing)
  • 6 Carafes
  • Up to 48 wine glasses (in boxes of 24)
  • Large WAW signs – 180cmx240cm (2)
  • Aprons (8)

How much does it cost?

Personal / NGO / community events: $5 fee + $50 refundable bond.
Business hire: $20 fee + $50 refundable bond.

You will need to pay when you pick up the items, either cash or eftpos. Your bond will be refunded when the kit is returned with all items intact, clean and dry. We will deduct a fee from your bond for cleaning dirty kits, or if there are any broken/missing items, as we have to replace them.

What extras are available?

We have:

  • 8 Wash Against Waste branded aprons
  • 6 glass carafes for serving cold drinks
  • 2 very large Wash Against Waste signs (1.8m high, 2.4m long) - usually used for festivals or very large events
  • 3 washing up tubs - usually used at outdoor events

What about Health & Safety?

If you will be reusing the kit several times at your event, the Wellington City Council Environment Health Officers strongly recommend the use of a dishwasher or steriliser between uses to keep things hygienic. All used items from the kit must be run through the dishwasher before being returned to the Newtown Community Centre and being loaned out to another borrower.

I love this but I’m not in Newtown – how do I set up my own kit?

Yay – we love the idea of more Wash Against Waste kits! We got a grant from the Wellington City Council Waste Minimisation team (thanks WCC!) to set up this kit and also received donated items from the WCC Tip Shop (thank you!). Try approaching your Council to see if there’s a fund, or a local waste diversion group who can help. If you have more questions about this, we’re happy to answer them. Contact us.
