Accessibility Information @ the main community centre - CURRENTLY UNDER RENOVATION

Newtown Community and Cultural Centre
The Newtown Community And Cultural Centre is located on the corner of Colombo and Rintoul streets in Newtown, Wellington.

Arriving and Getting in:
Bus Stop:

The nearest bus stop to the Community Centre is just across the road on Rintoul Street - number 6119. Bus's numbered 1 and 22 stop here. It has an awesome colourful covered bus stop, with a seat and a digital display to show you up to date information on when buses are due. If you can manage kerbs, simply cross the road and the Community Centre is right there. If kerbs are tricky, head down the road towards the intersection of Rintoul & Riddiford, turn left across Rintoul, then turn left again to head back up Rintoul. Cross Colombo St and the Community Centre is right there. There are Kerb ramps with tactile markings at all the road crossings.

Stop number 6019 is also close by - on Riddiford St near the corner of Wilson St.

Car Parking:
There is an access car park outside the Community Centre on Colombo Street but this is on a slope and parallel to the kerb so may not be easy to use for all access customers.

There is car parking in the surrounding streets - both "residents only" and free on street parking.

Fixed Ramps to the Main Entrance:
Our main entrance is wheelchair accessible via a ramp on either side of the front door. The door opens automatically from the inside and out.

What's inside the Community Centre?
Our Community Centre has several different venues inside. On the ground floor we have our theatre, dance hall, coordinators office, Citizens' Advice Bureau, the Newtown Tool Library, the kitchen and the drop in room.

The theatre has a small ramp at it's entrance. Take care when using this. The floor slopes down towards the stage.

The second level of our building is not wheelchair accessible. This level has our seminar room, a small room for hire and the Wellington Timebank office.

The stairs have good handrails on both sides.

Accessible Toilet:
There is an accessible toilet on the first floor, it is located near the theatre. This toilet is any-gender accessible. There is a baby change station for parents in this room. The wash basin is reachable from the toilet.

Kitchen Facilities
Kitchen facilities can be used by most access users. There is a zip for boiling water which may be difficult for some users to use safely. The stove, microwave, cutlery & crockery is relatively easily reached.

Getting out safely:
The exits at the Community Centre are well sign-posted. Although there are a number of exits, there is only one step free exit at the front entrance.
